A house built to be given away
Sri Sathya Sai Kuteer was raised on a single instruction: that a place of practice should be inseparable from a place of service.
Who we are
A public charitable trust and spiritual centre in Puttaparthi, offering a platform to spiritual aspirants of every faith. A community of volunteers, not a staff — nobody here is employed to be compassionate.
What we do
Daily worship, and daily service: meals cooked and carried, free medical camps, free tuition, drinking water without charge, and food for the animals around us.
Why we serve
Because we were told plainly that every action performed with devotion is itself a spiritual practice. Service is not a good deed added to worship. It is the worship.
Whom we serve
Anyone in need, without reference to caste, creed or faith — elders living alone, patients who cannot afford care, children whose schooling needs help, families short of water.
Swamini Mata Vishwatmananda Giri
Gurumata of the Kuteer. It was to her that the instruction to build this place was given, and it is under her guidance that everything here is carried out.
How it began
January 2017, and an instruction
In January 2017, Bhagavan Sri Sathya Sai Baba instructed Mata Vishwatmananda Giri — through direct conversation — to construct Sri Sathya Sai Kuteer. He said this place would become a centre of sadhana for thousands of seekers, and that Lord Panchamukhi Anjaneya Swamy is its Kshetrapalaka, the guardian deity of the site.
Through Jnani Bele, Bhagavan Baba then made the practical path possible: the mobilising of funds, the acquisition of the land, the Bhoomi Puja, the architectural style of the buildings, even the choice of builder. The Kuteer was inaugurated on 24 December 2017, on Christmas Day.
What that instruction produced is not a monument. It is a kitchen that starts before dawn, a water plant that never switches off, a hall that becomes a clinic on the 23rd of the month and a classroom every evening.
In a sense, this is not merely an Ashram — a hermitage — but a true Aashrayam: a sanctuary, a refuge.
Guidance
Under whose grace this runs
Every activity at the Kuteer is carried out with the grace and blessings of Gurumata Mata Vishwatmanandagiri, Sadguru Sri Anjaneya Swamy and Bhagavan Sri Sathya Sai Baba.
Their teaching sets the terms of the work: that any action performed with devotion — while respecting all faiths and transcending caste and religion — is a spiritual practice which fosters wisdom and lifts the individual soul. That is why the Kuteer draws no line between what happens at the homa kunda and what happens at the cooking vessel.
That teaching has been set down in writing and given as talks. Both are offered free: fourteen volumes to download, and a growing archive of recorded satsangs and talks.
How we work
Principles we hold to
- Nothing is charged. No meal, no consultation, no medicine, no litre of water, no tuition hour.
- No one is asked their caste or their creed. Need is the only qualification.
- The recipient is not below the giver. We call those we serve Narayanas — the Divine, come to receive.
- Regularity over spectacle. Daily and monthly, unbroken since 2017, is worth more than an occasional grand gesture.
- Volunteers, not staff. The cooking, packing, delivering and teaching is done by members of this community.
